This gallery contains all the racer faces depicted in the two Racer Faces Blog Posts in the Intersections blog series. Here is the link to one of the Racer Faces posts:

These photos depict racers exhibiting a wide variety of reactions (and a few non-reactions), almost all on course. All were taken during the 2020-21 season, when masks interfered with many face close-ups. Some fine racers who were both masked and whose features were obscured (mainly by reflective goggle lenses that hid their eyes) weren't selected for the blog posts (and therefore not included in this gallery).

The close-ups were intended to reveal something of racers' situational expressions, ranging from pleasure to aggression. A few stoic, impassive faces made the cut, too.

I think (let me know if you think otherwise) that racers tend to be more interested in photos that depict racing tactics and technique, showing skis and boots and hands and gates. Conversely, I think many parents like seeing their racers close up, in images that are technically hard to get with any quality.

Anyway, the other race galleries are full of shots depicting tactics and technique. This gallery and my recent posts have tried to zero in on the racers' faces and emotions.

A word about technique for anyone who cares: all these images started with RAW full-frame photos taken under the usual variety of ski racing shooting conditions. Long lenses were used for all these exposures, up to 560mm. Fast shutter speeds were needed for the race photos (usually 1/3200 second, sometimes 1/4000, and sometimes 1/2400). This meant ISOs were pretty high, sometimes as high as 4000 or 5000.

Good exposures and good processing can help retain image quality, but when you begin serious cropping (to zero in on faces), it is harder to maintain very high quality. As a result, these image files would lose quality with the enlargement my usual race photos permit. As always, the main goal with this gallery is entertainment, for racers and families who are reviewing the galleries for viewing pleasure. But sometimes people want to purchase digital images or prints. For this gallery (and the other Racer Face galleries for this season), I have limited the size of file and print purchases to discourage anyone from thinking they can simply blow up these images as large as usual. Most would be fine 5x7 or 6x9s. A rare few might be able to go much bigger, but most would not. If your heart is set on a bigger size for a particular photo, let me know and I'll see what's possible.
