Maui Shoreline; Maui, April 2017

Maui is finally all about the interaction between the relentless, high-energy ocean and the unyielding, passive island.  These images sample what happens in those collisions.  They were shot at high shutter speed (1/8000) to stop the water's motion and reveal jewel-like fine details as the ocean breaks and froths on the beach.  The zone of intersection between ocean and a given point of land is -- pardon the expression -- fluid, depending on wave size and wind.  The zone is perhaps thirty feet wide as waves break, roll up the beach, then recede to the water line, only to be swallowed by the next wave.  The waves variously break, collapse, roll, explode, or froth.  This day was breezy and sunny; there were some surfers, but not many.  Waves by local standards were smallish.  Even so, the waves were endlessly varied and entertaining, mesmerizing in the chaos in the surf, never alike.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
