Splash! Part Two; Maui Shoreline, 2016 and 2017

The shoreline chaos that results when breaking waves smash onto the beach overwhelms perception.  You can't see in real time exactly what is happening, and no sooner does the chaos of one wave subside than the next wave arrives.  The busyness and drama of the scene, with the constant, stacked-up approach of big waves, the offshore breakers, the surfer-dream curls, the spindrift that whips from wavetops, and the breaking waves that rush up or down the shoreline, make it hard to decipher what is happening as waves break and then exhaust themselves on the beach.  But on close examination, with long lenses and high shutter speeds, exotic figures emerge from the froth and foam.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
