Winter is winding down, the Olympics are long gone, and the World Cup Finals are now over, so ski racing is nearly finished for the season. The last local days of racing are nearly on us. They are the Western Region U16 Championships. They will be brief but will display fantastically athletic skiing by elite racers from the Western states.
The series doesn't begin until Thursday, and today was especially scenic on the Arm. Big ice floes are still prominent near Girdwood, wind gusts ripped away at the high ridges, and sun and clouds created fine shadows on the mountains.

The range of peaks behind Girdwood presided over the valley. Although the peaks were about six miles from the highway turnout where I was first shooting, I was using a long lens and when I began processing the images of the range behind Girdwood, the big display screen showed an alarming cluster of black spots against the snow field under the peaks. Cropped tightly in, the "spots" became six ravens playing in the wind, about six miles away.
The ridge behind Girdwood:

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images. They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation. I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill. Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking. I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
