Maui Scenes, Part Three (Palms, Again); May 2018

The structure of palms is graphically interesting to me.  Viewing their elements in isolation reduces the elements to fascinating abstractions.   Of the seven types of palm found in the Islands, only one - loulu - is native.  Coconut palms are the "classic" and iconic palms that are so identified with the Islands.  They were imported.  (There are some 2500 types of palms worldwide.)

Repetition, symmetry, and striking morphology make the leaves of coconut palms particularly interesting photographic subjects.

Even the trunks are interesting.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
