Ski Racing: What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Part 3; 2019

March 12, 2019  •  Leave a Comment

The variety of ways things can go wrong seems endless.  But despite relatively high attrition in some events (slalom) or under some conditions, a surprisingly large part of the field finishes upright.  I've been collecting these images for years, and there are maybe 256 out of more than 170,000 images, and many are event sequences.  So the probability of completion is surprisingly high.

This series of posts isn't intended to denigrate or mock racers' efforts.  They are instead intended to celebrate the challenge of this sport and those who choose to race.

And then there is always the possibility of a complete power failure that shuts down the chairlift before the start of the second run.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
