Portugal. A Very Neat Place (Lisbon, Part Six; Lisbon Under Stars) September 2019

Lisbon in normal times has a lively nightlife, ranging from touristy fado (nightclubs packed with tourists videoing with smartphones and checking bright screens) to fine restaurants.  Lisbon Under Stars is different.  It is a must-see multi-media light show projected onto the surviving columns, arches, and walls of the Carmo Convent ruined in the great earthquake of 1755.  (Initial repair attempts were unsuccessful and it was ultimately left un-repaired as an archeological site, and perhaps as a testimonial to man's hubris.)  The projections, some still and some in motion, depict historic figures and events (voyages of discovery, earthquakes, floods, fires, artistic influences,1974 peaceful revolution).  They end, more or less, with the reigning fado queen, Mariza (having also shown the late prior undisputed fado queen, Amalia Rodrigues).  The vibrant colors and images surround the audience.  The ruined arches and walls add authenticity and drama.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
