Big Moose, Little Moose. Again. Part One. (Anchorage, May 2020)

When spring arrives in the yard, moose babies often arrive soon after. Moose moms tend to have babies here. I took Charley out a few evenings ago and as I was standing with him beside the driveway I found myself staring at what seemed to be the large, brown, indefinite trunk of a broken tree just behind our shed. And since it is always important here to spot and decipher large brown objects, I spent some moments trying to remember whether there was in fact a large stump near the shed, or perhaps a new deadfall. Just about the same moment I decided I didn't recall a stump there or any wind that could have caused a new deadfall, I realized the stump was moving slightly and was actually the back end of a large moose. It was about 50 feet from where Charley and I stood.

So it was not a shock early the next morning to see a mother moose stalking purposefully along with two very new, very unstable
calves who were wobbling tentatively and knock-kneed on impossibly long legs.

And just in case you wondered whether the mother was ignoring the other calf, she wasn't.

Your photos of the moose and 2 calves are WONDERFUL! VERY MOVING! The mom obviously knows you're there and feels comfortable with that. You mentioned Charley being there -- was Charley upset about the moose being there? ... or did Charley somehow understand he was just supposed to be quiet and watch?

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
