Sunsets, Part One: Maui, 2017

Maui specializes in sunsets, capping each pretty glorious day with a pretty glorious sunset.  For those who are normally hedged about with mountains and atmospheric conditions that periodically hide the sun, each Maui sunset is another revelation.  And because the ocean horizon is - not surprisingly - at water level, the sun's disc, already dramatically magnified by the atmosphere, visibly touches down and rests momentarily before sliding beneath the water.  Even then, the show's not over: From below the horizon, the sun still garishly lights up any clouds.

People gather on the beaches to watch, smartphones capturing the scene and themselves (of course).  Someone (the same person each night?) blows a conch when the sun touches the horizon.  The post-show is still to play, and it will all happen again in about 23 hours and 40 minutes.

Here are a few confirming images (although technically some are pre-sunset and some are post-sunset).

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
