Eagles Convene

In late June there was an eagle fly-in, a convention of sorts, at water's edge on nearby Auke Bay beaches. A few of these photos, taken at a short telephoto distance (no wider lens was immediately available) show as many as 27 eagles arrayed along a nearby cove, but there were probably nearly 90 eagles along the entire beach. It was hard to count them accurately; the immature eagles blended well with rocks and seaweed.

It wasn't immediately obvious why they had come, because initially they just stood at water's edge. Most were perched on rocks. Few had waded in. But eagles don't waste their energy, and it wasn't simply a social gathering. There had to be a good reason why they had gathered. Certainly they appeared purposeful and intent.

Although new arrivals weren't welcomed, dominance prevailed.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
