Maui Fauna, Part Two; April 2017

April 20, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

The upcountry Maui pastures nearby provided frequent distractions even though there were no glossy, perfect cattle in sight this time, only a few distant horses, and the monarchs fluttered by sparsely.  But there were plenty of compensations.

The sheep clopped back and forth.  And the deer were numerous -- twenty seen at once -- this year, attended by a buck with enormous antlers.  The does seemed nervous.  Pheasants thrummed about, their hoarse squawks a jarring contrast to their handsome appearance.  Egrets came and went (and dropped in on the sheep, see Part One), and little birds were everywhere.

This was a noisy crowd. At night, the large herd of barking deer flowed yipping through the pastures and the pheasants squawked at first light as early as the local roosters, and then called harshly back and forth through the rest of the day.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
