Sugar Mill; Maui November 2016

The sugar mill was a looming presence near Kahului, Maui, with tall stacks and billowing vapor clouds.  It often looked vaguely demonic, especially on dark, overcast days, when the vapor contrasted brilliantly with the dark factory and gray skies.  It would have been a good setting for a dark Batman sequel, or perhaps another climactic Terminator battle.  At any rate, it is now shut down, and the buildings look much diminished, no longer looming or brooding.  Now in sunlight the big factory is simply a rusty red that isn't much different from the red dirt and dust of the cane roads, and everything is quiet, without giant cane haulers coming and going.  The economy will suffer, and what will happen to the cane fields is of concern.

I took these (and many others) in November 2016, knowing of the intended shutdown.  I converted two to black and white.  I never had a chance to shoot on a dark, gloomy day, when the mill was at its most dramatic.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
