More Moose (Calves); Anchorage, May 2017

Declining to wait for Mother's Day, the Monday Moose mother-to-be won the race for territory by occupying, and then populating, the yard sometime Wednesday evening with two brand-new calves, thus increasing the Anchorage moose census by two.  Finishing a distant second was the lawn service, which will have to wait for the moose family to vacate.  The twins are already pretty stable, nursing standing up, and walking in the rougher terrain in and out of the yard.  So the the little family will probably move on in the next two days.  Calves mature fast, by necessity.

As of Monday, the would-be mom had not seemed close to labor (such as it is for moose), and it seemed likely any calves would arrive next week or so, per the usual schedule.  Life is full of surprises.

There is no really graceful way for a moose, adult or infant, to lie down.  The transition from up to down is awkward, with more angles and limbs than seems possible.

One twin chews on a twig.

It is a gentle, sunny day and the trees are leafing out nicely.  A pleasant day to join the world, although the calves must have arrived late Wednesday evening under a bright moon.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
