Maui Scenes, Part Six (Colors of Maui, Again); May 2018

Given the tireless energy of the ocean waves that rush up against Maui's beaches, the colors in the waves seen here are surprisingly subtle.  These waves are just about to roll up the relatively steep sands of Makena Beach.  Their elusive and ephemeral tints are less easily appreciated by a beach-side observer overwhelmed by the ocean's exuberant power and the unending procession.   Contributing to the delicate gradations seen here is the relative depth of waves approaching Makena, where the slope is steep enough that the waves don't pick up much discoloring sand until they are very close to the beach.

As the waves rise and build, they seem lit from within.  Their aqua and green flavors entice.  EF4A8491EF4A8491 EF4A8499EF4A8499

Just as subtle are the colors of the sky when squalls sweep past or mists drift in and out.

But Maui's zestier colors are never far away.  Not at all subtle is the refreshing green of a translucent leaf.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
