Given the constant overload of Maui's Triple-S (Sky, Surf, Sunsets) scenic magnificence, an occasional underload provides some welcome low-drama relief and a pleasant chance to relax.
Thus, the concentric ripples caused by big raindrops are relaxing when a downpour abruptly pelts the pool and raindrops seem to bounce back up. (Actually, the drops are causing a mini-splash, as seen in the detail.)

And when a child's bright red birthday balloon tries to escape without being forced by wind or surf against sharp rock and punctured, it is intriguing to follow the balloon's attempts to navigate these perils.
First seen, during a lull in breezes and surging waves, the balloon rests in a tidal crevice in the lava. 131A0245

Then, a fresh breeze takes it aloft. Its shadow is tinted red. 131A0247-3
But a wave that surged into the crevice now retreats and threatens the balloon. A fraught moment. 131A0255-3
Surviving that threat, the balloon relaxes between waves on a cushion of foam. 131A0284
Another surge arrives, and foam tendrils clutch at the balloon. 131A0285-3
Still afloat and unpunctured, it rests in a lee. 131A0256-3
Then, lifted aloft by a breeze, it floats over lava outcrops. 131A0302-3
Last seen, it floats calmly in a tidal pool farther down the beach, still buoyant and still un-punctured, and still very bright red.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images. They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation. I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill. Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking. I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
