Maui in Motion; Palms and Waves (April, May 2021)

Iconic to Maui are palm trees and waves. At relative rest, they are starkly different in appearance: in comparison with the collective mass of waves, the fronds and trunks of palms are distinct and hard-edged.

The palm trees' distinct lines contrast with the waves' collective mass.

But in motion, energized by wind or ocean swells, palm fronds and waves both seem to flow in arcs and lines that are simultaneously graceful and chaotic. Their visual fluidity is especially apparent at slow shutter speeds. And, as waves react to the rising bottom of Maui’s coast, wind-whipped spray and vapor accentuate the movement.

Here waves are dramatically and dynamically altered, each moment providing a unique and always-changing display of energy.

Here palms bend to form ceaselessly never-repeating patterns of overlap as branches and fronds all move at different frequencies, impelled by their individual aeronautical properties.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
