Auke Bay - Sky (July-September 2021)

It isn't exactly accurate to talk about the Auke Bay "sky" as though Auke Bay has only one "sky." There is, of course, only patch of atmosphere that arches over Auke Bay from horizon to horizon and that extends far upward. In the narrowest sense, that is Auke Bay's sky.  But to an observer on site, Auke Bay has many skies; a new sky arrives daily or hourly. And each sky seems to have its own tone and mood. Each might even have a musical analogue ranging from Gershwin to Beethoven.

Here is a sampling, as blue skies eventually, as always, disappear and are replaced with ranks and waves and billowing masses overhead. These sorts of images aren't everyone's cup of tea.  Whether someone finds them interesting or attractive or boring or repellant might depend on whether they were raised under a perennially blue sky or a low ceiling of gray. For an observer raised in Southeast Alaska, they are fascinating in their endless variety.

The ensuing banks and rolls are diverse and diverting, especially when, as here, a few bright shafts or glimmers seem to offer hope of brighter light.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
