Beach Scene; Auke Bay, August 2017

Out onto the beach at low tide early this morning, trying to photograph a seabird nest and maybe chicks from below our point.  That project was unsuccessful, but other image opportunities immediately arose, including a great blue herron out on the reef (and a second one that flew off), a kingfisher with breakfast, a pigeon guillemot (whose nest and chicks remained hidden) with what looks like an eel, a seal, a gull, and a panoramic stitched from six frames, and so on.

The herrons are interesting because they are so big and mysterious.  But the kingfishers are especially neat because they have serious attitude and dive for their food so successfully.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
