Motion Studies (Sequences); Alyeska, 2016, 2017

Photographs can, despite their graphic precision, sometimes depict ambiguous scenes.  But sometimes precise images involve no inherent ambiguity, even when they are from sporting events and the faces of athletes potentially reveal something of the challenges faced.  What you see is truly what you get.

These images, of Alyeska Ski Club U16 and U19 junior racers in 2016 and 2017, have no such ambiguity.  As sequential images painstakingly merged in Photoshop, they really just depict motion and something of the athletes' grace and effort.  They do not suggest how fast these athletes are moving.  Even in the slowest depicted event, slalom, the racer is moving at 25 miles per hour through gates set at a 9- or 10-meter radius.  The giant slalom and Super-G speeds are much greater.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
