Moon Shots; Girdwood, March and April, 2018

April 12, 2018  •  Leave a Comment

The moon made repeated guest appearances during the U16 championships.  It edged up over the first run of the Ladies' GS, rising behind athletes as they kicked out of the Waterfall start, but I couldn't align it with racers from where I was standing, even after I moved to the bottom of the Waterfall. By the ladies' second run, it was prominently over Max's Mountain while I was shooting the Cabbage Patch gates.  It was still too high and too far West to align with racers, but a 737 flew past, leaving a dramatic tangential contrail.

The moon appeared even more strikingly over Mt. Alyeska late the afternoons of SuperG training and racing.    It rose like a curious balloon over the ridge line and tracked the ridge as men's training and racing proceeded.

Clear skies continued after racing ended and visitors had gone home, and the last shot is from the highway across the Inlet taken as the moon was setting in the early morning on April 2.  The moon was perfectly full the morning before, but it disappeared behind a low cloud (the only one in sight) before I could set up the shot against nearby peaks.

The moon was setting over the peak across Cook Inlet from Alyeska in this early morning shot taken after the races ended and everyone had gone home.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
