Maui People; Street Photography without Streets; May 2019

Candid people photography is usually called "street" photography, given its urban origins.  Cartier-Bresson, Weegee, Evans, Frank, and Winogrand are a few of the most famous street photographers. Their subjects were usually unaware they were being photographed.  And their streets were prototypically those of New York City and Paris.  Apart maybe from Lahaina, Maui's streets - and sidewalks - rarely have the concentration of human subjects typical of cities. Otherwise its sidewalks are empty most of the time and traffic pretty much precludes walking or playing or standing on its streets.  So, for Maui, "street" photography needs some redefinition.  How does "beach" photography sound?  And even that is too narrow, since the Kula Saturday Market offers some of the best candid opportunities, and it is held in a parking lot and thus not on streets, sidewalks, or sand.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
