Blind Trust. Alyeska, February 12, 2017Eyes momentarily closed, UAA's Alix Wells double-cross-blocks an Alyeska Cup slalom gate. She was near the second run finish line and won the ladies' race. I took this image, and about 1500 others that day, but this highly cropped shot stands out because it illustrates the speed with which things happen in slalom, and where agility and reflexes and luck often determine outcomes. Wells wasn't really flying blind; she had to blink sometime during her run, and this was actually a good time to do so, since she had the full distance to the next gate to open her eyes. Anyway, she was almost certainly looking far enough ahead on the course that this looks more dramatic than it really was. Ski racing is a great subject, with action, drama, and terrific athleticism. After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
