Golden Eye; Juneau, August 19, 2016The vibrant colors of this spawned-out salmon correspond to the vibrant contributions wild salmon make to Alaska and Alaskans (and to anyone else lucky enough to live in the vicinity of Pacific salmon). The bright, golden eye of this fish still seems focussed on something, possibly the survival of the species. Perhaps it simply reflects the consuming drive that forced this salmon to leave the Pacific, swim up the turbulent Mendenhall River, swim through the lake at the foot of Mendenhall Glacier, and then wriggle through the shallow waters of its creek of origin before dying. Taken near Mendenhall Glacier, August 19, 2016. Canon 5DIII, 100-400 IS II lens with 1.4 extende; 560mm; 1/1000 at f/8; ISO 1600.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images. They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation. I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill. Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking. I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
