Denali Park Scenes, Part Six: The Mountain (August 2020)

September 16, 2020  •  Leave a Comment

The mountain, Denali, is of course the whole reason for the park. People visit the park to see the mountain. Or, more accurately, they visit hoping to see the mountain. It generates its own weather, so even on clear days the mountain may not be visible.  And not every day is clear.  Plus the mountain is not visible at the park entrance, and is largely hidden by terrain until the visitor is well inside the park.

The mountain is visually striking, with planes and facets and bright snow fields, and it's improbably big. Even when it is fifteen miles away and there is a sweeping vista of tundra between viewer and mountain, it looms.

This brief visit paid off. Here are a few images of Denali, all processed differently, and taken from one of the few road-accessible spots for visitors without road permits. The clouds didn't cooperate for long. Within half an hour the mountain had shrouded itself. It was still hidden a day later.   Look carefully to see one flank of the mountain, in the center of these images, visible between dense cloud layers.

In the next day or so, my Denali Park gallery will contain much larger versions of these images, as well as more views of the foliage, animals (such as they were), rock, and sky.  There will be titled sub-galleries for these subjects.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
