Antoni Gaudi; Barcelona, 2009

Barcelona is an exciting, beautiful city, but the main reason to visit is to experience the legacy of Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926), the Catalan Modernisme architect most famous for the still-unfinished Sagrada Familia and other organic Barcelona buildings.

Four of the towers of the Sagrada Familia, with construction cranes far overhead.

The interior is strikingly organic.  And large: Its vaults are as high as those of a major gothic cathedral.

The Casa Batllo was a family home.

The design elements are fluid and organic.

One feature of Gaudi buildings is inevitably a crowd of transfixed visitors holding audio devices explaining Gaudi's vision and his complex designs. Gaudi preferred models to design drawings; one can imagine the difficulty skilled workers must have experienced trying to execute Gaudi's designs, whose shapes were as fluid as the ocean that lapped at Barcelona's shores.

After a lifetime of mainly expressing myself with words, my postings here will mainly rely on images.  They will speak for themselves to some extent, but I'll usually add a few comments of explanation.  I've taken photographs for decades, since the 1950's, inspired in part by my father's photographic skill.  Four years of photo assignments and quality darkroom time eventually gave way to decades of casual and family picture-taking.  I re-immersed myself when I left film and turned to digital.
